Even if the official launch date for the new MP4-12C has been announced to be in mid May for Europe and in September for the USA customers, McLaren has offered to a limited number of auto journalists the opportunity to test three of its dynamics testing "mules" on a 2.9 mile long autodromo in Portugal.

The Geneva Motor Show in March will host the European debut of an all-electric prototype of the Toyota iQ. A flat, newly developed and compact lithium-ion battery mounted under the car's floor powers the electric motor of the iQ EV. Toyota informed that the battery pack did not reduce the passenger space or the regular iQ's load area and its potential driving range reaches up to 105 km or 65 miles. Offering a potential market launch through a leasing programme, this EV prototype is currently being tested on European roads, also investigating its viability in other regions. The car is expected to be brought in the USA and is going to join three more new models at the firm's Geneva Salon stand, incorporating the Yaris HSD hybrid concept, a closer production concept of the FT-86 rear-wheel drive coupe and the European market variant of the Prius+ minivan with seven seats.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SL Roadster convoy was spy photographed in Spain

A convoy of camouflaged Mercedes-Benz SL prototypes, which were accompanied by several other vehicles wearing the well-known star on their bonnet, was spy photographed in Spain last week by a car enthusiast, named Frank. Frank stated that he was on a trip to the south of Spain and he could not be happier to see the next SL, embodied by a heavily camouflaged Mercedes-Benz Coupe/Cabriolet. Despite the heavy cladding, a simple glimpse at the pictures makes us realize that the two-piece folding hard top from the predecessor is kept by the new generation model. Its styling will most probably be inspired from the German firm's more "artsy" design philosophy, which could be noticed on the recent concept models, such as the F800 Style, together with the latest CLS, along with a more aggressive front grille. Key components, such as electrical systems and the suspension bits are expected to be shared by both models as the 2012 SL was developed alongside the SLS Gullwing. After an almost decade-long hiatus, the return of the Cabriolet nameplate to the Golf range, will be marked at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. One of the main features of the two-door four-seater includes a soft top with an electro-hydraulic drive that can be lowered or raised in only 9.5 seconds and the underpinnings of the latest generation Golf hatchback inspired the car model. The driver is also able to perform this process while driving at speeds of up to 30 km/h. As far as the exterior styling is concerned, there are a lot of similarities with the Golf Mk6, but the Cabriolet incorporates a unique rear section, more swept-back angle of its front windscreen frame, together with lower profile roof line. As compared to the previous Golf Cabriolets, the newcomer features a pop-up rollover protection system, which appears to be similar to the one found on its sister Audi model, the A3 convertible. Lexus releases new photos of the Geneva-bound LFA Nurburgring Edition

Lexus has recently presented more than a dozen new pictures of the LFA Nurburgring Edition version of its supercar, after initially providing a batch of three photos of the more track-oriented vehicle. Its world debut will take place at the Geneva Motor Show, on March 1 and the engineers built it in order to celebrate the LFA's hat-trick of class wins at the Nurburgring 24 Hours race. Only 50 of the 500 LFA cars that will be built are going to receive the Nurburgring performance package, with all these versions scheduled to be crafted during 2012, which represents the second full year of LFA production. Significant changes brought to the six-speed sequential transmission drop shift times from 0.20 to 0.15 seconds, while this LFA Nurburgring Edition provides a more powerful version of the front-mounted 4.8-liter V10 engine, which delivers no more than 526bhp, an increase of 10bhp as compared to the standard version. The original LFA's 3.7 second 0-100 km/h sprint time and a maximum speed of 325 km/h are maintained despite the faster gearbox, the impressive power boost due to the aerodynamic enhancements featuring an increased drag, meant to augment downforce at high speed and comprise a larger front spoiler, fin-type side spoilers, a canard fin and a fixed rear wing. Other important specifications include exclusive mesh-type wheels integrating dedicated high-grip tires, a 10 mm reduction in the ride height, as well as a more hardcore suspension tuning. The exterior colors of this limited edition car model limit to only matte black, black, white or orange, while the interiors will be finished in black and red, black and purple and all-black. Maybach 57 S Coupe by Xenated debuts in Geneva, but not at the show

The new Maybach 57 S-based coupe is going to make its first public appearance at Geneva, but as strange as it may sound, the location will not be the Palexpo center, where the Geneva Motor Show will be held, but a pavilion in the gardens of "La Reserve" hotel, located on the banks of Lake Geneva. The company has not confirmed yet whether this decision is somehow related with Maybach being present at the show. The displayed car will be a customer-specified model, which was configured by Fredrik Burchardt, the Xenatec designer, and was built exclusively for him. A special effect is created by the car's two-tone paintwork with its matte finish applied by hand in special layers. A thin gray line separates the main colors, just like Maybach limousines, while the finest craftsmanship defines the interior, with upholstery made of mid-brown buffalo hide combined with dark nappa leather, all hand-stitched. Nappa leather was used for the finish of the headliner, while the owner specified Alcantara lining for the footwells. The same 6.0-liter V12 engine from the Maybach 57 S delivers 612HP, 1,000 Nm of torque and provides a top speed of 275 km/h, with an average fuel consumption of 16.4 lt/100km. It is expensive and it looks expensive, featuring a starting price of EUR675,000, before taxes.

Chevrolet reveals Cruze hatch

Chevrolet has released new picture of the final production version of its new five-door Cruze hatchback that will be launched at next week’s Geneva motor show.

The Cruze hatchback was first seen as a thinly veiled near production ready concept at last autumn’s Paris motor show and the Geneva show car sports almost no noticeable changes over that model.

The five-door model, underpinned by GM’s Delta platform that’s also found on the Astra, is a crucial car for Chevrolet in Western Europe as it gives hatchback practicality to the Cruze range for the first time.

Chevrolet UK managing director Mark Terry said the car offered the firm “a huge opportunity in the UK” given the popularity of the Focus/Golf class with UK buyers.

Chevrolet has said the new Cruze hatchback will come with “a new range of engines” that will be topped by the 161bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel unit from the new Orlando MPV mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.

The firm claims the Cruze five-door brings “new levels of style its versatility”. Boot capacity for the car is close to 400-litres.

UK sales will start in the summer, although the firm has yet to given an indication on pricing. It is one of four new cars to be launched by Chevrolet in the UK this year; a new Aveo, Captiva facelift and Orlando, will join it in the Chevrolet range.

If your main priority is practicality, check out the Honda Pilot. It’s larger than the Murano and can’t offer the same level of sporty performance, but its bigger size means more cargo room, seating for seven (and more LATCH connectors), and it has a lower base price. Although the Pilot is larger than the Murano, it only give up one miles per gallon in city driving.

2011 Nissan Armada

An imposing stance and rugged, macho styling cues separate the 2011 Nissan Armada from the rest of the full-size SUV crowd, but the Armada fails to stand out for interior space, comfort, or practicality.

The 5.6-liter V-8 engine in the Armada makes 317 horsepower and 385 pound-feet of torque, and it starts with the rumble of a muscle car. Its torque-monster character works well with the five-speed automatic transmission, allowing smooth, quick takeoffs, even with a full load, as well as impressive passing ability (thanks to quick, responsive downshifting), while it can tow up to 9,100 pounds. The Armada, by some gauges, can get to 60 mph in less than seven seconds—good for such a large vehicle. But while brakes are good, steering, handling, and maneuverability are sore spots for this mammoth truck; try to make any quick change in direction, and you're woefully aware of this vehicle's tremendous heft.

What you see from the outside is essentially what you get inside the 2011 Nissan Armada. This big ute has seats that are a little hard to get up into, but once you're there, if it's in the first two rows, it's comfortable. And if you're wondering how there's a third row with space for cargo, it comes down to either passengers or cargo back there, really, and the load floor is awkwardly high.

The seating position of the Armada is pleasant and upright in the first and second rows, with the front seats especially quite comfortable and supportive—and it's easy to find a good position with the available adjustable pedals. Second-row captain's chairs are also very comfortable but reduce capacity from eight to seven, replacing the bench seat. In back, the third-row bench is just passable for smaller adults, but it leaves almost no cargo space and headroom is tighter back there.

Refinement isn't so top-notch, and its an area where the Armada is showing its age. Nissan has moved to dress up the Armada's interior in recent years, but overall, there are too many dull plastics in this interior, and trims still look on the cheap side. Ride quality in the Armada is firm but smooth, soaking up most major bumps, but it isn't the most refined experience. In multiple test vehicles over the years our editors have noted a fair amount of wind noise, and engine noise in these vehicles is cranked up to an almost ever-present level. While the V-8 sounds good, it can get wear on you on long mountain passes, or when towing.

2010 was, just like 2009, a very difficult year for the whole industry but, with the help of scrappage schemes and government incentives, a large

part of the industry managed to survive. The end of the year brought the first signs of recovery and 2011 was expected to bring bigger sales in all segments of the industry. Unfortunately, the end of incentive programs brought lower sales all around, including in Europe.

On the Old Continent, the automotive industry registered a decrease of 0.9 points in January, selling a total of 1,070,231 cars, down from 1,079,839 posted in the same month of the previous year. Germany remains the biggest European car market with 211,056 sold units last month, an increase of 16.5 percent versus January 2010, followed by France with 185,521 versus 171,478 (up 8.2 percent).

In case you're wondering, Volkswagen is the company that sold the best in January, delivering a total of 127,885 units and posting an increase of 5 percent. But the biggest increase was registered by none other than GM's Opel which sold 72,902 units, up from 68,286 units in January 2010 (+6.8 percent).

Volkswagen Golf is still the best selling model in Europe, with 38,860 units delivered last month, a drop of 1.9 percent versus January 2010. The Polo comes second with 28,882 units (down 9 percent from the same month of 2010), followed closely by Ford Fiesta with 27,012 units (down 31.3 percent). Only two models sold in Europe managed to post sales increases: Opel Astra - up 6.7 points and Ford Focus - up 0.9 points.

2011 Volkswagen CC

While basically a restyled version of Volkswagen's conservative Passat sedan (no longer offered for 2011 while an all-new version waits in the wings), the CC hits an entirely different aesthetic realm--and to many, looks like a more expensive car than it is.
If you feel that the 2011 Volkswagen CC feels a little bit like an auto-show concept, or a much more expensive vehicle, you're not alone. The CC takes after the Mercedes-Benz CLS with its stunning, coupe-like silhouette, frameless windows, and long, flowing design--including nice rear styling that tucks neatly down. The Volkswagen CC's interior still stands out several years after introduction; it includes details like contrast stitching, contrast color themes for the upholstery, and pleasing, upscale trims that aren't typical in a car that starts well under the $30k mark.
While the strong, sleek appearance of the 2011 Volkswagen CC might suggest sport sedan, it's not quite that. All of the CC models are quick on the straight line, though they don't handle with the verve of a sport sedan, clearly trading off some crispness for comfort. The engine that powers most of the CC line is the excellent 2.0-liter turbocharged, direct-injected four-cylinder, making 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque, and we much prefer it to the 3.6-liter VR6 engine that's available (only in 4Motion all-wheel-drive guise). VW's excellent DSG automatic is now offered in the CC, and we like it or the standard manual. The VR6, which has to be revved a bit, simply doesn't move the CC that much quicker to justify its fuel economy figures, of just 17 mpg city.
The VW CC handles well, but that's not its forte. Most of the lineup--especially the four-cylinder models--ride quite well, and lavish interior trims feel luxury-car caliber; the interior is tight and serene, too.
But take even a brief look at the rather odd seating arrangement and slightly cramped backseat, and it's abundantly clear that the Volkswagen CC is a vehicle that was designed for form over function. Backseat space isn't passable for adults, for head room reasons, while the front-seat position is, for lack of terse terms, a bit odd.

Toyota made the announcement with Governor Earl Ray Tomblin, U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller, U.S. Representative Shelley Moore Capito, Toyota management and team members in attendance.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing West Virginia, Inc. (TMMWV) currently builds 6-speed transmissions for V6 engine models including the Avalon, Camry, Lexus RX350, Sienna and Venza.

The expansion will bring TMMWV’s annual transmission capacity to nearly 400,000. The expansion raises total employment to approximately 1,100 and total plant investment to $1.26 billion.

Similarly, Bodine Aluminum facilities in Jackson, Tenn. and Troy, Mo. will also add capacity to support TMMWV. Start of production at all three facilities is projected by the end of 2012.

The two Bodine Aluminum plants will provide transmission cases and housing parts to the West Virginia plant. The expansion will increase Bodine’s capacity by more than 320,000 units annually representing approximately 20 new jobs and an $8.4 million investment.

Audi RS5 Wins Sports Car 2010 Award

The mid-level luxury car market has turned into a battle royal with the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Infiniti M and the Jaguar XF existing as some of many prestigious packages reloading for a premium sedan fight. At first look, the most eye-catching detail of the new A6 sedan is the more aggressive Audi A7-farmed headlamps style. Audi’s newest edition MMI radio and CD player is standard operated through a 6.5 inch monitor. To offer a full scale of multimedia options, DVD charger, a 1,300-watt Bang & Olufsen supplied 15-speaker sound system and wireless LAN are all features found on the new Audi A6.
