Audi RS5 Wins Sports Car 2010 Award

68,132 readers of Auto Bild SportsCars just awarded the Audi RS5 Coupe with the title “SportsCar of the Year” for 2010 in the “Production Coupes” category. 173 cars were split up amongst 17 categories, which were then divided into two “production” and “tuning” subcategories, so I guess that would be 34 categories total.
In other awards, the Audi R8 GT won second place in the “Production Supercars” category, the Audi R8 Spyder 5.2 won second in “Production Convertibles,” the Audi S3 Sportback got third in the “Production Compact Cars” class and the Audi RS 6 Avant also took third in “Production Station Wagons.”
Looks like those Germans are really proud of their Audis!

New Look, New Future, New Audi A6

The mid-level luxury car market has turned into a battle royal with the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Infiniti M and the Jaguar XF existing as some of many prestigious packages reloading for a premium sedan fight. An ultra-competitive luxury car market, the position of standing still is essentially going backwards. At first look, the most eye-catching detail of the new A6 sedan is the more aggressive Audi A7-farmed headlamps style. Given a near menacing stare at the road, an option all LED forward lighting further enhances a look of a high-tech sports sedan. Dedicated to allowing drivers to have the best view of the road in all driving conditions, new Audi A6 sedans also have an available adaptive light function automatically adjusts illumination based on the surrounding traffic. An available S line package for the outer part of the new Audi A6 lends to more racier design details including sharper front bumper and a rear diffuser insert.

A skillfully conceived exterior, interior details of the new Audi A6 were also granted the expertise of Audi personnel. Said to be a trip into “an ambiance of airiness and roominess” according to Audi, the new A6 controls are thoughtfully laid out around the dash panel and center console for the motorist. Audi’s newest edition MMI radio and CD player is standard operated through a 6.5 inch monitor. To offer a full scale of multimedia options, DVD charger, a 1,300-watt Bang & Olufsen supplied 15-speaker sound system and wireless LAN are all features found on the new Audi A6.

For the absolute luxury feel, optional comfort seating for the driver and passenger provides up to 18-way adjustment. Beyond power seating adjustment controls, comfort seats also incorporate a massager offering five different levels of stimulation. Audi fans have been eagerly awaiting the official launch of the Q3 crossover from Audi and details are being revealed as the unveiling nears. The Audi Q3 is designed to meet head on the BLK or GLC from Mercedes-Benz and the X1 from BMW.

Spy images are very scarce on the internet but the Q3 is expected to have the design lines of the Cross Coupe concept that was exhibited during the Shanghai auto show back in 2007. Earlier spy photos of the Q3 protoype hint of a prominent grille, distinct headlamps, and sloped roofline. The smalles SUV will be deriving its DNA from the platform of the VW Tiguan with a suspension system tuned to make the riding experience sportier.

The Audi Q3 will have three engine options. Consumers can opt for the 2.0L TFSI that gives out 168 hp or 208 hp. Another option will be the 2.0L TDI that produces 168 hp. These powerplants will be mated to the usual Audi transmisision choices. Carbon dioxide emissions may hit 158 grams per kilometer through 184 g/km.

The Audi Q3 might be unveiled during the upcoming motor show in Frankfurt with first deliveries in Germany on September or October. The Audi Q3 will be marketed side by side Audi’s bigger SUVs the Q5 and the Q7. Production will likely take place at the Seat plant in Spain.

More Details on U.S.-Spec 2012 Audi TT RS: 360 HP (Maybe), Priced Around $60K

Last fall, after an outcry from enthusiasts, Audi confirmed it would bring its top-spec TT coupe to the U.S. But so far, we’ve heard little about what content our version of the TT RS will have. We cornered an Audi spokesperson at the 2011 Chicago auto show, where the TT RS made its quiet U.S. debut, and forced them to cough up some details. (Okay, it was a little easier than that.)

The European version that we sampled almost two years ago made 340 hp from its turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine. Much to our surprise and thrill, Audi says it’s pushing for U.S. cars to make about 20 more ponies for a total of around 360 hp. We asked where the extra power is coming from and were told it’s mainly from ECU tuning, so presumably the Euro cars could be updated as well. Our RS will also come equipped only with a six-speed manual transmission, and little else is changed from the overseas edition. We won’t, however, be getting the available Recaro seats. No big surprise there.

Only a few options will be offered on the limited run of less than 1000 cars. As of now, an exterior package featuring silver accents on the lower front and rear valance (matching the mirror caps) is planned, as is a Titanium pack bundling a blacked-out grille and trim with titanium-colored wheels, much like what is currently available on the A4, A5, S4, and S5. A sport exhaust option will provide a rowdier note from that already sweet sounding five. Those not in favor of the RS’s rear spoiler can opt for a factory delete.

The TT RS coupe will arrive by the end of this summer as a 2012 model. Like many of these details, pricing is yet to be finalized, but expect to pay a base price “in the low-$60K range,” that is if you can get your hands on one.

Audi A8 prototype gets broadband internet capability

Audi has developed a fully-functioning prototype of an A8 model fitted with a new broadband Internet-access technology.

The new in-car Internet function was developed by Audi with partner Alcatel-Lucent and features LTE technology. LTE is a next-generation mobile transmission technology, a successor to the current 3G system, that also includes UMTS mobile standard. LTE features data transfer rates of up to 100 Megabits per second, compared to 14.4 Megabits/second for 3G.

"We will use LTE technology to extend our advantage in automotive networking and further consolidate the Audi connect strategy," said Michael Dick, Audi Board Member for Technical Development, at the presentation of the broadband A8 prototype.
